915 opened; gears/pignon numbers q

Hello,

Following closely previous threads here on rebuilding/replacing synchros on 915, I have now also dismantled the nose cone and center section of my mag-cased 915/40. Aim is to get rid of the grinding noise when shifting to 2nd and 3rd.

I would like to know what diff and what gears are in mine end have found nicely hand-written numbers on most gears. These are some I found:

3035
6474
2799
6427
7444

The bottom of the pignon has these numbers on them:

Does anybody know what these numbers mean and which diff is in it?

Thanks,
Walter

The gears come in pairs (one on the Main Shaft and one on the Pinion shaft). You should find a number on each gear and the same number on the mate for that gear.
I'll let someone else chime in with what the numbers on the pinion mean.

The 2483 will likely be the number to match up with the number on the ring gear. The N26 will refer to the setting distance of the pinion gear face from the centerline of the differential carrier. In this case 66.30 mm (a standard number found in the shop manual) + 0.26 mm (the number on the pinion face) to give 66.56 mm, the setting achieved for the pinion gear by the shim under the clamping plate for the pinion shaft. I don't find a reference to the other number.

9.75 is September 1975, this is a relatively rare 8:31 CWP set with the mechanical speedo drive gear.

The hand etched digits marked on the other gears are purely to identify them as matched sets.
