need help: steering rack lock ring?

hey all,

I just finished replacing the tie rods with the turbo tie rods and I found that on the driver's side there were some parts which _should_ have been in the steering box which were not. Three parts to be exact....a lock ring (?) with maybe 12 teeth around the outside, a rubber ring (1/8 inch wide), and a plastic ring maybe 1/4 inch wide. The lock ring was cracked which I'm assuming allowed the pieces to come out. Without the pieces the in the box, the rack becomes loose thus resulting in a little play in the steering. Does anyone have any info on this? perhaps a diagram of the rack? whats the part number here on pelican parts?

btw...the turbo tie rods is probably the best upgrade i've done so far! i would suggest it to everyone with the carrera rods.

thanks for your help,

David

No diagrams but there are quite a few good threads on steering rack rebuilds on this site - dig around a bit. I just rebuilt my rack, and the parts you describe keep the rack aligned with the pinion ie centred in the steering assembly. . Important to say the least. I personally wouldn't do a whole lot of driving until you've sorted that out.

David, I think I can help you out. I believe you are talking about a Seeger ring, It is a locking type ring designed to be pushed in and lock into place. In your case it's tabs lock the guide sleeve for the steering rack into the housing. I looked all over the place to no avail. When I was putting in a quick fix sleeve for a loose steering wheel i noticed there was what appeared to be and identical ring on the steering column. It is pelican part #999-041-102-01-oem. For $1. it may be what you are seeking. Since it is oem, you may can get a peek at it at a dealership before ordering it from our host, of course . Hope this helps.
