915 homework

Well the good news is I got a new to me 83 911 . Pics coming soon. Just drove the car 300 miles home. Bad news is I cant downshift from 2nd to 1st unless completely stopped or matching revs. The tranny shifts perfecty otherwise. I have already adjusted the clutch and am going to check my shifter bushings and adjust linkage tomorrow. I dont expect this to fix the problem. It seems the right thing to do is to drop the motor and tranny clean, do a valve adjustment, plugs, wires and necessary gaskets and hoses and crack the tranny inspect and at the very least replace the 1st gear sychro and dog teeth. I have done a brief search and am looking for some good reference material. I sounds like the Bentley is the way to go. Any tips or online reference material would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

You can't downshift into first with a 915 transmission unless you're almost at a dead -stop...it can't be fixed, that's just the way they are.

slotcar is right - you have to be doing less than 5mph
to shift into 1st gear - and that's with a good synchro
ring!

I can downshift my 915 into the 1st at 10 mph; your first gear synchro parts are "shot". If you go in, in addition to the first gear synchro ring and dogteeth also at a minimum replace the first gear brake band and the second gear synchro ring and brake band.

No, mine shifts down fine. Matching revs will always help of course, but I have driven others where that didn't help and you had to be at a dead stop. A real PITA...

A 'freshening' will definitely help this. Fill with Swepco..

Maybe "some" truth, but not 100% truth.

After I rebuilt/refreshed mine, she easily slips into 1st at up to 10 mph, just like Jim Sims says. Not always, but easily the larger majority of the time. I never try to force it though...if she doesn't want to go, I won't make her. It's amazing how much more in-tune I am with this car after the rebuild...even after 2 years.

fly944,
When you say you can't downshift to 1st while rolling, do you mean it balks, or more likely it tries to go but grinds and clashes attempting to shift into 1st? If yours is like mine it WILL go to 1st, but it ain't pretty and it ain't good for the synchronizer dog teeth (unless you blip the throttle to match revs). If this is the case you know that your 1st synchronizer ring is worn. It's not doing the job of bringing the gearset to a matching rotation speed through friction and allowing the synchronizers to mesh smoothly (hence you have to use your accelerator to do the job of spinning the input shaft intead). This is all too common as 1st and 2nd gear are used far more than the other gears. Problem is you don't know how long this has been going on! When I drained the tranny fluid from my '85 last year (first year I had it) I found 3 whole dog teeth in the pan!!! If you replace the synchro rings right away when it starts to grind like that you can minimize the harm. I would be prepared to replace the synchro ring and gear on 1st as well as the 1-2 operating sleeve, as this has the corresponding dog teeth that are clashing against the first gear teeth. There's bound to be some damage there, too. As the car is 23 years old you may find that the selector fork (1-2) is worn out of tolerance, too. This can make for sloppy shifts. If you have to pull out the tranny, make sure you don't have to do it again anytime soon!! I am faced with the same repairs soon, but I hate to take it off the road during the summer as we have so little good cruisin' weather up here. Best of luck!

BTW... Bentley manual is indispensible if you are a DIY'er. Make sure that you get the '78-83 manual, of course. You'll get more courage with this book than a mickey of Jack Daniels.
