959 Revisited
At the time the 959 was new, it was regarded as "the most advanced production car in the world. Of course [that was in comparison to" the Ferarri F-40 or the Countach."
"But after the [996] turbo, the 959 feels primeval and dangerous." With PSM switched on, "flat out across a winding road" the 996 "is simply the fastest car you can buy from point A to point B." On the other hand, the 959 "is a handful all the time... the steering is heavy but numb, lacking the jinking, bump-steery feedback of most older 911s. Instead, the front floats, never feeling quite tied down. ... the 959 fights the road, fights the power, fights you... The 996 turbo "is a 200 mph grand tourer, effortlessly overtaking the 959 in every department, technically superior in every way." The 959 is "now totally outclassed." I would have been very disappointed if this was not the case. After all the 959 was almost twenty years ago now.
