Brake replacement/upgrading/slippery slope
I've been following Matthew's brake threads with intense scrutiny, and read Bill's great upgrade pages. Thanks all for the great info on the site.
I am (hopefully) in the final stages of getting my dedicated track car out of the garage and onto the tarmac. This is my first track-dedicated car and while the budget is not extremely tight, I don't want to overspend where I won't appreciate/need unobtanium parts. My front and rear rotors are at replacement specs. All the components are stock for a Japanese 83 SC. When I bled the brakes with new ATE blue (using Motiv) and I slowly depressed and pulled up the brake pedal, I could hear a "gurgling" and "hissing" sound from the rear vacuum hose outlet in the engine bay (which is disconnected.) My goal is a very firm/communicative/fade-free setup. Leg-force isn't an issue as I'm a pretty strong boy and my events are fairly short... I am making some assumptions here.... 1. That my master cylinder is now 23 years old and that sound out the vacuum hose could be some leaking being telegraphed through the vacuum booster to the vacuum port 2. That while cross-drilled and slotted rotors might be on the cutting-edge, that the risk of cracking and the cost/benefit might be questionable over standard rotors. 3. That I might want to do further upgrades later, so I should plan for those where practical. 4. That I will be ducting air to my brakes through my RSR front valance. 5. I'll be running my 16" fuchs initially So here's my plan, would appreciate any criticisms or pointers; 1. Replace master cylinder with Turbo unit ($250 Pelican). This is a little pre-emptive but perhaps also will work better with the rest of the pieces below and will allow me more upgrade choices in the future. 2. Carrera calipers up front ($240 each from Pelican) 3. Standard Carrera flat rotors up front. ($75 each from Pelican) 4. Adjustable Proportioning valve (Bill, you still have that purple one for sale?) 5. Rebuild my SC calipers in back. 6. Standard flat rotors in back. 7. Have my vacuum booster rebuilt. I have a favorite guy I've used before ~$100. Already have new stainless lines in. Any other "while you're in theres", like rebuilding hubs or other stuff to make it more expensive or time consuming ;-) Thanks all

Oh, and Pagid Orange RS 4-4 pads...though Pelican doesn't seem to list them for Carrera fronts...are they available?

check the ball joints and bearings, and used calipers will go for about half of that.

You're right, and then some on the calipers...there are a couple sets for sale out there...its almost worth it for me though to start from fresh and know my bumbling rebuild skills aren't in play...
