Mystery 915

Hey guys.

Project targa I picked up this weekend came with a 915 tranny of unknown condition. What would be the best course to evaluate it? Will probably be a few months till the car is painted and motor installed.

Install it and see what happens, or open it up and inspect gears and such? What do you think?

Open it up and inspect it while it's out of the car. 30 minutes to get it apart now vs 3-4 hours to drop the motor/tranny later plus 3-4 hours to re-install plus the unscheduled down time you would experience if the transmission had issues.
