When to replace track pads

I use my '87 Carrera mostly for DE's, and I was checking the rear brake pads on the car (Pagid Blacks), and they are the same thickness as the backing plate (about 2/3rds worn down). I have been getting great wear out of these pads (10 DE's), but is it time to replace them or can I go another weekend? These are 930 rear calipers, so overheating has not been an issue, though I know how much more heat a thin pad can transmit. The car is up on stands so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
rickdm

The usual recomendation is 50% because of the heat issue

At 2/3 worn I would certainly replace them. I agree with the 50% philosophy. It is false economy to stretch those parts for track use. With good 50% pads I would carefully mark them and save for emergency install. You could spill brake fluid in an almost new set just before a session and then you have a proper set already broken in to use to recover.

Your rotors need similar attention.

At each change it is useful to cycle the pistons in the calipers.

Best,
Grady

When the center groove is gone, the bonding rivets are not far behind - and is then time to replace.

At least that is what I've heard form a few hundred customers ;-)

On my 944 I have noticed that as the pads wear, they wear faster.

New pads will use less than 10% on a track day. the last 30-40% can go all in one day.

Before reading your posts I went outside looked at the pads again and decided to do what you all suggested. It does seem like a false economy to get one more DE out a set. My front pads are a little thicker than the plates so I left those in, but I will watch them closely at the track.

How do you cycle the pistons in the calipers?

Thank you,
rickdm
