Rear Seatbelt Bolt Removal Help!!
I have been trying for several hours to remove the rear seatbelt bolts and they seem to be locked in. I know its a 17mm and I have tried several different sockets as well as vice grips, tapping the bolt, spraying WD40 trying to loosen the bolt and to no avail. I need some advice to try and get these seatbolt bolts out. I got both the receptacle bolts out but for the life of me can't seem to get the seatbelt retractor bolts out. The left side is stripped or close to stripped. I can't get a socket to stay on it but can still get the vice grips on it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hmm....you "know" its a 17 mm , huh?....
Funny...all cars....even Euro....use seat belt bolts that are US thread 7/16-20 fine pitch...don't know what "head " size this uses....but it won't be a 17mm. Might be close. If the hard-to-remove bolt is the inboard side...this can be seen from under the car. Maybe spray some PB blaster on the exposed portions of the thread that can be seen from below ( inboard sides). In any case, WD-40 is worthless as a liquid to help budge tight bolts. Use PB Blaster, or Kroil or Wurth Rost-Off. Nothing else works. Wil

Wil,
Thanks for the help. I have been using a 17mm and it removed the other 2 bolts and it looks like that might be part of my problem. I just got the right one out with the help of a friend but the left one looks beyond help. Chris

If the head is not too boogered up try to find the "correct" tool ( size) and try again.
Sometimes, a quality part like from Snap-On will make a difference in situations like these... either a socket or a wrench, etc. Maybe even a flare nut wrench so you have some extra "grip"..... I'd try a flare wrench and a hammer..but be very careful in striking metal with metal. Use safety eye glasses and maybe tape the wrench where it's hit. Yeah...the outside one.....no access from below.... ![]() Wil

I just purchased a damaged bolt nut remover set from Sears and I am hoping that this will get it out. I got grip on it now but need more strength to get it out. I will try tomorrow and hope for the best. Thanks for all your help again.

Yeah, the "reverse easy-outs" can be life savers.
These: Plus a good 1/2 drive ratchet (and maybe an extension) should do the trick.

I had to use an impoact wrench on mine and even then they were bears. Yes, the head was ultimately ruined.

I was lucky. I got mine out with only a couple of busted knuckles. BTW once I get them out I put in new bolts to fill the holes.

Its finally out. Thanks to Sears, their Craftsman Line of Tools and you guys. I need to join their tool club if they have one. Eric, that is the exact set I purchased all for one bolt but I have feeling if I continue to work on my car, I will be needing these again.
jtratza - Did you put new bolts in as a place holder?

I put bolts in to keep the dirt out and I felt like heat was coming in through them. Could have been my imagination.

Serious Question pardon the ignorance here,
Would the Sears Craftstman set pictured above work on a set of bolts that have completely rounded off heads? I uncapped the rear bolts today to remove/install belts for DE and discovered some previous owner/repair nonsense in that 3 of 4 bolts are completely or very near completely rounded off. I need to know which specific tools / method for the job to get these 3 bolts out. They also appear to be overtorqued well into the plastic with very little to head to be seen, few mm. Thank you, -Ivan

When I removed mine, I had to break out the 1/2 drive Snap-On impact sockets. I didn't use air, but the thing you have to realize is that you can't use a 12-sided socket or wrench (such as yours) on a bolt head that big that's on that tight....they use an epoxy at the factory to seal the bolt in. You have to use a six-sided socket (1/2 inch drive and a breaker bar). If it's too buggered-up, you'll have to use those easy-out bolt extractors.
