New Street Tires

I've got an '87 911 Targa with stock 16" wheels. (I assume they're stock, thats what I got it with and they look stock). Its getting time for me to buy new tires and I've been dissapointed with all the choices I've made so far for tires.
First priority is stiffness. Every tire I've put on this car so far has had a lot of sidewall roll so I get the roll-and-catch in the corners.
Second priority is cost. I'm not looking for a budget tire, but something preferably under $180 each.
Third is grip. I don't ever race, and any summer tires will probably have enough grip for me.

I'd like to keep the same diameter I have now;
205-55-16 on the front
245-45-16 on the rear

Thanks in advance
Ken

I just got a brand new set of Toyo T1-R tires on the back of my 911. They are great so far and cost about $150 each at Big O Tires.

I'm using Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2/3 (rear/front). They are top rated for wet weather, although my car never sees any. They are also decent dry weather tires as well. Been on a few spirited runs and they seem fine with me. BTW, they are the same sizes as yours.

Dave

Edit: Not quite the same size. My rear tires are 225/50

For some inexpensive tires, the Yoko ES100s aren't too bad. I've used them on the street and track and they've held up well and performed better than I expected for tires that are essentially <$100 each...

Ken, am I reading this right that you are putting 245/45's on the stock 7" rear rim?

I just bought a set of Pirelli PZero Neros and I am very happy with them. Paid slightly less than what your price range is from Discount Tire Company.

TOYO T1R's are incredible and offer a semi-sticky grip for casual and fairly agressive driving. I got a set mounted and balanced for $500 in AZ. After having both Pirelli and Michelin's (nice but spendy) and Yokahama (cheap and great wear but not good for grip at all), I love the TOYO's. And they look very cool!

I got Sumitomo's from Tire Rack. They 245s were on sale at $60 ea. But now they are regular price of a whopping $69ea. So the 205s are 60 and the 245s are 70 for a total of 260.00+shipping. Not bad! Here is a link to the tires I got....

The Sumitomo's are good as ar the FuzionZR1's that I am running. Again, not much experiaince with them in the rain. I did caught once up north in a downpour. I had no problem running at 75-80mph. They are priced close to the Sumitomos.

Considering the impact of rapidly rising fuel costs I wonder what the mileage plus/minus facts are on various tire choices? Anyone have any data on this aspect???

There is a set of Yokohama ES100's for sale in the Pelican classifieds for the size you need and for only 375.00. Sorry I can't get a link to post here.

Dang! Nobody answered his question regarding stiff sidewalls!
I've got the same requirement. Anybody got a read on the Dunlap Sport Max. I want quick response and minimal sidewall roll too!

for stiffness, on a road car, most of the z or w speed rated tires are going to be fine, if you are tracking it thats another story. -what size rear rims do you have? if they are stock they are likely 7in, which could be your problem, 245's are pretty wide on a 7in wheel, the proper size is really 225, so you may be feeling the sidewalls rolling because they arent supported well by this size tire.

I don't know if they're stock wheels. They look stock, but they're painted white, and they're 16s. How can I tell if they're the stock size? its hard to measure the width of the rim with the tire on there.

The size should be stamped on the inside of the wheels.

The reason for the question about the rim width is that to be running 245/45 you need 9's. If you have 7's on the back then IMHO 245/45 and stiff sidewalls is an oxymoron. Stock size on 7's and 8's is 225/50, BTW.
