Introducing myself
I know this is a bit belated seeing as how I've already asked for help twice! Thanks to all of those who have helped.
My name is Joe Spence and I live in Columbia, MO. I'm a computer tech at University of MO hospital. I've always loved cars and I've been involved in AutoX for a couple of years now. I just purchased a Red 1982 911SC Targa. The car appears to be in great condition for as old as it is but would not win any car shows. It's a driver not a show car. It was delivered in Germany and had it's first service done in Marseille (sp) France. I am the 3rd owner and it has around 67,700 miles on it. The 2nd owner hit a deer back in 1999 and the car has been totally repaired including all new paint. I'm not a Porsche expert so I can't tell you how close the paint is to original but I've had several people tell me it is spot on. I expect I'll spend a lot of time on this board. I'm just worried that I'll get paranoid about the car breaking down. I used to own an air cooled BMW motorcycle and reading the Airheads mailing list would make you think you couldn't go more than a mile without a serious malfunction. Why doesn't anyone ever post things like "I just turned over 100K and all I ever did was change the oil and adjust the valves." People tend to keep quiet until something bad happens. I'm attaching (hopefully) a pic of my new baby. She looks a little too orange in the photo. It was a bad time of day to be taking photos. Joe http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1145828345.jpg |
You have one of the most dependable cars ever built, IMHO. I have a 1980 SC as a daily driver in Pittsburgh PA! It has let me down only once and it was the after market alarm system. Drive it, maintain it and enjoy the hell ouy of it.

Nice Targa :) Enjoy and welcome :)

Joe,
Last week I sic’d Pelican Kurt V on you. He is very knowledgeable and has his office in Jefferson City. You guys should get together. BTW, my son is a sophomore at William Woods University in Fulton. I get there occasionally. We occasionally drive over to Columbia for dinner. Perhaps we can connect. Best, Grady |
Things do wear with age but you have a low mileage car with a simple design that has been proven with time. I think that puts it in a catergory that makes it possibly more dependable than buying a new car today off the showroom.
Enjoy it. It looks great. |
Nice car, and by the way, I have a garage full of BMW airhead bikes. My newest one is 28 years old. They're all hot-rodded and cafe'ed out. I give them normal care and feeding and they've never let me down.

The fact is that your car is 24 years old and they all require routine care and feeding. The more you know the easier it is though. I've learned a ton from this board and learn something new every day. This board has been invaluable!
Nice color and I like the Targa!....of course I'm a bit biased..... my 1980 with 71k miles http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1145838124.jpg |
Spence, Grady gave me your name and I PM'd you. Anytime you want to get together and talk cars let me know. Another guy on the list, Robbie, lives up in Centralia.

I in Springfield Mo. and I am in Columbia-Jeff city often. If your in need of anything, let me know. I also have a 76 R75/6

Nice car. Welcome to the forum!

Why doesn't anyone ever post things like "I just turned over 100K and all I ever did was change the oil and adjust the valves."
Ok, I'll say it... My car has 222,000 odd miles and it never has anything more than routine maintenance. Mice Targa, have fun with it. Dave |
In the interest of keeping up with market value of 82 SCs, could let us know what you paid for the car? Its a beauty! Enjoy the Pcar experience.
Thanks Here's mine. 82 coupe basically stock, 115,000 miles, 4th owner, approx value $10Khttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1145848034.jpg |

The fact that you bought this car shows that you do. After awhile it will become an obsession and you will not rest until everything is perfect. Don't worry about breaking down. Worry about your wallet! ;) ianc |
Welcome. What a lucky guy you are to have found a 24 year old car with only 68K miles. Don't own one, but everyone in the know says the 3.0 cars are the most bullet proof. If you take care of it, you should have miles of fun & worry free driving.

Mostly Good News
The fact so many thousands of us own these fantastic machines is a testament to their drivability (and repairability). I drive mine to work daily and it has over 100,000 miles (170,000km). There's no way mine's gonna be a garage shut-in. Of course I think about wear and tear and repair, but in between I'm cruisin' around and enjoying the view between those gorgeous bulging front fenders! Gratuitous Pic to follow...
