Replace Rear Caliper Seal in situ?
Is there any way one can replace the dust seal on the rear calipers w/o having to remove the claiper form the rotor & car? This is an M caliper and the inboard piston dust seal, BTW.
From browsing thru various threds on the dust seals, I'm pretty sure the answer is either "no" or "hell no" but I thought I'd ask just in case somebody has a great trick way to do this. Otherwise I'll just let the partly torn seal stay ther during the summer... |

I can't imagine doing this w/o removing the caliper. I had a helluva time installing those seals w/ the calipers off the car.

I can't see it being done without removing the caliper. I rebuilt my calipers last year at this time and as OffCamber said, they're hard enough as it is to install with the calipers removed. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, when you go to install the boots you might want to use the lid of a Gerber (baby food) jar to help you press down evenly. This is one tip I read about afterwards and never got the chance to try but it sounds like it would have helped at the time.

Thx - this mirrors the older threads... I saw the baby food jar lid trick - I'll add that to my dumpster diving list.
Along the same line - someone mentioned there were two types of Ate dust seals - ones with the integral metal ring (very hard to get on) and ones with a separate ring. he had never found how to determine a p/n or which was which. Has anyone ever figured out how to get the latter kind when you order?
