Clutch release fork - Do I need one?

How do you know if you need a new one of these?

Engine is out and I am doing the clutch (915 Transaxle) as well as a general clean up and new seals everywhere. My release fork looks good with no wear but I am wondering what determines if it needs replaced. Help?

Thanks,

Steve

If there is not excessive wear and no cracks (inspect it carefully) then reuse it.

I replaced mine because I read somewhere that it's a good thing to do while you're in there. The old one had nothing wrong with it though so I think I may have just wasted $95. I'm with Jim. Inspect it very carefully and reuse it if all looks good.

I just splashed it with thinner to help find a crack.

mine was good, so I reused it.

the tips get notches worn in them from pulling on the T/O bearing, and they tend to crack, so there's two reasons.

I had my whole clutch re-done after 20,000 miles because my fork cracked. Save yourself some headache.

Replace it!

I had a new clutch and T/O installed 5k miles ago.

Now I can't shift into 1st and we think a broken fork is the culprit.

In a 1973 T with a standard pressure plate and nominal engine (130 or 140 horsepower tops) the shift fork is not a highly stressed component; if it isn't worn or cracked it can be reused. Money would be better spent putting in new fuel lines.
