My 911 being started after 4 years sitting (pics)

I need to share my excitement! With a little help from Jimmy (Mobile Works East), we got my 70 E started. What a mess! But, I can now say that she runs and can move in and out of the garage under self-power.

The engine is all stock including MFI with 120k on the odometer. The PO said it was last run in 2002. I swear I thought the neighbors were going to report a fire, it was so smokey. But the smoke died down after a bit and the engine settled into a nice 900 rpm idle. Amazing.

I am amazed that anyone would let that car go 4 years without running.

I wish my 76 Targa was like that. It smokes on startup but the smoke abates fairly quickly. Then it acts like it has a bad cylinder.
Now the calipers are hanging up.

Wow, thats some cloud of smoke! The neighbors must have loved it. Nice to see another 911 brought back from the dead.

I plan to burn off the fresh gas in the tank by letting it idle. A lot of the smoke I think is a combo of the marvel mystery oil I put in the cylinders and old fuel.

I am hoping to restore this car to 100% original. Everything is here for that. The new dash and scheel sport seats should go in before months end.

As for the smoke, I thought for sure I was going to see the fire department or the police...maybe both.

Might want to think about some techron, and about not letting it idle through a tank of gas. I've read from several sources that, at least for warm up, you want to drive the car, not let it idle to running temp. Not sure if the same goes for idling after such a long nap.

Congrats by the way - you can tell she's grateful for you grabbing her.

Count me among those who vote for driving the old fuel out over stationary running. That is, unless there are brakes & steering issues. Mobil Porsche Works...boy do I wish we had a similar service up here. Any details on what was done before the initial start-up?

Rockafella,

Chances are very good that the smoke is from oil collected in the muffler ... after leaking up the exhaust valve guides and down into the exhaust ports and heat exchangers.

If the engine runs well enough to take for a two-hour drive ... it should burn off, eventuially. Otherwise, remove muffler, pour out any collected oil from all three pipes, then rinse out with Varsol or similar solvent and allow to evaporate for a couple of days.
