WI to South Texas Fun Run April 23

So on April 22/23/24 I'm making a fun run to San Antonio from Madtown, WI. in the SC.

Basic route is 39/51 Rockford South
55 St. Louis
44 West to Oklahoma
69 South to Dallas/FW
35 South to San Antonio

1300 miles... should average 75 mph most the way. Maybe 20 hours elapsed time. Might go straight thru or two days or three....why???

Anyone on this route got an extra CDI just in case?

I'm carrying extra fan belt, one quart of oil and my Glock.

Any roads I can really run on like 130-150mph???

Cool

Three days to go!!!

Getting stuff packed....maybe take two belts!!!

No one lives in MS, OK, or Texas with route info? Figured I'd just run into that I35 construction south of DFW???

Just gotta find where to secure the match loads now!!!

I was born and raised in Texas, you can run 130-150 where ever you want but our highway petrol will probably not look to kindley on that. I don't know of any roads that would be safe $ wise to run that fast.

tsuter,

I'd recommend a different route through Oklahoma. Take I-44 West to Tulsa. Go South on highway 75 and pick up the turnpike at Henryetta. Turn South on highway 69 just South of McAlester. Keep going till you hit Dallas. Pick up I-35E in downtown Dallas and head south.

Do not go anywhere near Oklahoma City, if you want to make good time. I-35 has way too much traffic. There are places on the turnpike that you'll have a couple of miles of visibilty if you want to wick it up a little. DO NOT speed in any of the small towns along the way. Thay all have cops with nothing to do but give you a ticket. 10 over the limit is usually OK on the major roads.

A suggestion alternative for I35 from Dallas. Take 67 out of Dallas thru Cleburne to Glen Rose. Out of Glen Rose there's a turn into Hico, don't know the name so stop and ask.Take 281 south out of Hico to San Antonio. Many small towns so pay attention to speed. Long sweepers great vistas. Watch the local pick ups, their not always paying attention. DO NOT drive it at night. Deer can seriously damper the experience and their everywhere. Great drive one of my favorites. Enjoy!

Looks good. I'll try that as it seems like a lot of towns on 69 south of Muskogee.

Excellent! I was looking to avoid 35 south of DFW and I have to get to the NW side of SA anyway. Last time I was in Texas with the 911 I got tagged for 137mph on 40 east of Amarillo. No reason to experience that scene again and 281 looks like a good choice.

Well its done. 20 hours drive time. One and half days. 1350 miles. 23.8mpg. I think the turbo increases fuel economy....at sustained 75-80mph.

Followed the proposed route suggestions.

Never even checked the oil. Temp and level gauges never moved from 8:00 and 2:00 and pressure was where it should be.

Only had a few good chances for some nice triple digit speed work.

Since this car will now be in San Antonio at my house here, I'll have to learn about getting a safety inspection with no cat, air pump/injection, egr,... Pre 1984...

Any Texans know the rules for non smog Bexar County???

Non smog counties...

Safety only. Lights, wipers, brakes, tread on tires, horn, seat belts, etc....

No sniff test. Visual inspection of the engine only.

Lots cheaper than a smog county too.

I'm down in Houston, not on your route, but I do have the CDI out of my 930 if you need it. Do you want my cell number in case you have a problem?

I figured out no sniff but what's on the engine visual? Are they looking for an air pump and cat since those were factory installed? Or are they just looking at condition, rusted out mufflers .....for pre 1984..

281 is definitely the way to go regardless of how fast you want to go--35 is a bear--horrible.

I used to drive my 993 from Dallas to Austin on 281 and you can see for miles ahead, which inspires great confidence that you're not going to come up on a slow-moving truck or whatever.

Because I used to live in SW Austin the 281 route was only about 15 minutes slower than 35 running without traffic or construction (very rare).

Be aware of cops through Marble Falls, which is just north of 71.

If you think you may need anything when you're blowing through austin PM me and I'll give you my cell #. Jack
