Clutch project finished - one problem
 

I just got back from the first drive after a clutch job. The clutch action is unbelievably smooth compared to before. All the gears engage fairly well after my initial coupling adjustment. 1st and 3rd need to be adjusted a little further apart though.

Only two problems that I can see: the speedo doesn't work and the battery/alternator light stays on even after key is out. Any ideas on these two things??
BTW, I did remember to reconnect the transmission ground strap:)

I assume the fan belt is on and the alternator is working.

You have a couple of large wires that hook to the starter and a couple of small wires that hook to spades. Do you have them connected right or reversed?

It is strange to me that the light is not on when the engine runs but lights up when ignition is turned off. The light is lit still when the key is pulled.

I haven't had a chance to check if the alternator is charging the battery. The 2 large wires are connected on outboard solenoid terminal and the one small wire is connected to the upper spade solenoid terminal.

Speedo uses a small puck-shaped electronic sensor that fits in a depression in the side of the trans case and is held in place with a small clip. Make sure you hooked the wires from it back up again,

Why was I thinking the 2 wires going through the tunnel are for back-up lights? Connecting those 2 wires is one of the last things to be done.

According the Mr. Bentley if the alt light is on when the ignition is off the alternator may have bad diodes. The way to verify this is to disconnect the blue wire at the back of the alternator and the light should go off.

It was really dissappointing to tear back into the alternator after just getting the engine back in. This would have taken no more than 15 minutes while the engine was out but instead I spent 2 hours-grrr. However, I found a disconnected spade connector off the blue wire terminal. Easy fix; now the light is off.
