Tracing speedo wires into dash
 

Hi Guys - newbie to the forum here. I bought a 1980 911SC some years ago AFTER it burned up in a suspicious fire. Lots of wire damage and anything rubber underneath.

The car has been running for a while, now I'm trying to finish it up. Still have lots to do. Since I got a speeding ticket and was able to get a deffered judgment, I can't get another before July or I'll really be in trouble, I need to fix my speedo. The wires to through the tunnel were toast. I can see the two sensor wires coming off the back of the speedo, but don't know how to get behind the dash to trace the to were they end. Is there a trick to getting back there?

Open the trunk and remove the carpet. Remove the board in front of the blower assembly. Then, take a look and remove anything else that you deem blocks your access to what you want to see.

If I had a lot of wiring work to do in that area, I'd probably pull the battery, the fuel tank piping and the left side air distribution plumbing.

Get a Bentley SC Repair Manual, you'll love it.
Aside from many pictures, it has the electrical diagrams.
To get into the dash, you have to pry out the gauges by carefully applying 2 screwdrivers left and right for leverage under the bezel-edge.

Javadog - I completed most of the wiring some time ago. I only have a few details left to clean up with the wiring, I think. I did not finish because I was trying to get the car drivable sos I could run it at the race track with the then local PCA club in NM. Now I want to drive it more and need to get some of these things done. It has taken forever due to lack of time. I am thinking I can get some time this year to finish it up.

I get back into the trunk and will see if I can trace the wires to their burnt ends.

Thanks Gunter - I was kinda hoping there would be a few screws to undo and magically the dash, or some large part would drop out of the way so I could get to everything I need to get to.
