901 shifter for 915?
Will a shifter assembly from a 67 912 with a 901 4sp work with a 79 915 5sp upgrade?

Since the 915 shifter can work with a 901 gearbox, it should also work the other way. But why?

I believe that the old 901 shifter was a stock fitment for the 915 transmission in 1972. The "915" shifter came online in 1973 if I remember correctly. Shouldn't be a problem, then.

I'm replacing my 901 with a 915 because I broke the spiders in the 901 the 915 should be just strong enough for a Ford 302. I know a 930 is a lot stronger but with a few mods the 915 will work.

It will fit and shift the transmission, but the spring lockout will be on the 1/2 gears rather than 5/R.
The '72 shifter for the first year of the 915 is much like the 901 shifter you have now, but the spring lockout was changed to the other side for 5/R. Bottom line - it will work but you will have to be vey careful to not hit reverse gear. |
