A whirrrr of the starter motor but no start...
I came out to a dead starter earlier in the week. I turn the key, the dash lights dim and the fuel pump hums but no click from the starter, nothing.
I've checked all the connections, grounds and the battery. All are fine. Ignition switch (both electrical and mechanical portion) are less than 2 years old. Not sure what I was thinking but I jumped the 2 poles of the solenoid and got a whirrr of the starter motor. I've tapped the solenoid but still no start. Bad solenoid? Oh I should also point out the starter is a 2 year old rebuilt unit from Napa (Beck Arnley) as opposed to Bosch. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Scott |
Sound like the solenoid siezed if the lights dim a bit when trying to crank

Yes, corroded & binding solenoid plunger ... or clutch plate wear particulates & rust have bound up your bendix mechanism.
You can remove, disassemble & clean the starter ... and replace the solenoid [if defective] ... lube the solenoid plunger, rocker arm, and bendix mechanism with Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Grease with Moly #985 or #986. |
Thanks guys, I'll pull the starter and clean or replace that solenoid.
