1971 911E question

I'm repainting my car ,all the car is taken apart for paint (engine susp. etc...) , my question is. what color would you paint the wheel wells and bottom of the car I want it to look as original as possible.

What about the trunk area? I think it was satin black from the factory.

And lastly what is the best way to clean the aluminium on the gearbox?

Thanks

Fred

You will find more dedicated info on the Early S Registry site, but my '71 had body color in the wheel wells and trunk, black in the engine bay over the body color which showed thru in places. People on the early BBS said this was corrrect. I painted the truck satin black anyway.

Edit: Heh he, I said truck......trunk

If you are going to the trouble to do it, the trunk finish is "overspray body color" which is whatever they managed to get into the trunk when the body was painted-- it is NOT a glossy topcoat, but it should be body color. Engine compartment is just like Milt said, satin black over body color over sks-like pebble texture.

I've heard it might be satin black in the trunk if it was a Karmann body but, my 70S is body color in the trunk. Original paint there for sure. Engine compartment is undercoat then body color with the satin black brushed on over the body color.

I'm not up on all the idios of the Karmann body.

What's your VIN?

Fred-
My '70 E was black everywhere you are considering black. It is a Karman coupe. There are Reuter cars that had body color in the trunk well before your car was built. If your car is Reuter made, color in the trunk would be more likely to be correct. I second the recommendation to visit the S site and search for "trunk color." There has been much discussion about this confusing subject.

Your gearbox is not aluminum, but magnesium. The best way to clean them is with a Scotchbrite pad and A LOT of elbow grease. You must protect the metal afterwords. Do a search on Tectyl to see the proper way. I'm rebuilding my box, and am going to use an anti-corrosive spray intended for marine use (available in small quantities).

Michael my vin # is 911 120 1077 and the interior of the trunk is satin black most of it with some white showing, I'm not sure if the trunk area has been repainted or not.

Scott on the gearbox I was hoping for a different answer, something like use such and such and it will be inmaculate in 5 minutes I guess no such luck, I'll have to do it the hard way

Thanks guys

Thanks again

Gold-
I have sanded my trunk extensively in preparation for repaint. It is clear that the color was applied to the body first, and that the black paint was subsequently applied, as I discovered burgundy paint underneath the black. The black was, in turn, underneath EVERY item attached in the trunk area. Given the history of the car, this makes me confident that the black was applied at the factory when the car was made.

I'm sure there is nothing about the appearance of your gearbox that 40 hours of work won't make right.:
