78 sc vacuum advance

My vacuum advance is broken...plate frozen according to mechanic.
Can I a) unfreeze the plate and rig the advance to work without a vacuum unit? If so how?
or b) use a vacuum unit from an 83 since that is the only year I can find?

thanks

Can't answer this one, but there are many here that surely can.

I'll bump this one for you and suggest you post a pic of your ride as a newcomer - keeping with the local customs might get you a warmer response...

Welcome.

The plates may be able to be unfrozen by taking the vac advance units off and removing the service plate (oval pressed in plate). I then used starting fluid spray ( Ether) and turned the distributor upside down so all of the crud runs out the free end and not into the bushings! I manually rotated the plates and a rust like fluid came out between them. I rotated them until no more colored fluid ran out. I then liberally oiled the space between the plates after the dist. dried in an upside down position. I then put it all back together and tested the advance with a vac pump gently. And you could see the plates move via the advance bellows.

I do this bianually. I think there's a Bob Tindle article how to. He did not use the Ether though. Use the ether outside. Oil and grease before reinstalling.

thanks, I'll give that a try. I have a vacuum advance unit on order from Germany. Will take three weeks to get here. In the meantime, I'll try loosening those plates.

venetian..what exactly did you order and can you supply a part number. I've got an old 78SC distributor that is needing some parts.

I ordered a distributor vacuum unit from the local porsche dealer. they were out of stock on this website and so was every other source I checked into. the part number as far as I can see is: 930-602-910-00-OEM
it is the vacuum unit on the side of the distributor.

best of luck,
