how do you look up a vehicle's history
carfax requires 17 numbers.........well, I only have 8 for the

You need the entire vin and then you have to pay some cash -- 19 for one car and 25 for open account. Not sure how long the open acct. lasts.

but, my title only has 8 numbers.......the same 8 numbers that match the numbers on the inside of the door.
it looks like carfax is for 1981 and newer, for cars with 17 numbers/lettes |

Carfax and the others only work with the 17 digit "standardized" VIN. No fax for you.

yeah you cant carfax the early vin numbers. I think the 17 vins started in the 80's. Thats one of the reasons early cars with complete histories command such money.

Individual states can provide some ownership info. Trick is, knowing what states the car was previously registered in.
