Uneven break pad wear
I changed out my brake pads today for the first time since I've owned the car (Feb. 2006). I noticed that one of the pads was worn unevenly. The pad on the outward side of the left rear wheel had worn considerably more on the top than the bottom (top meaning where the holes for the pins are). None of the other pads were like that. What could cause that?

Sticking caliper would probably do that. What's the biggest difference between your two cars? Does the 997 feel more disconnected than the SC?

What's the fix for a sticking caliper?
The SC does feel more connected than the 997 (I've only had the SC on the track though). With the SC, I can feel everything that's happening with the car and I found it fairly easy to find its limits. The 997 is an awesome car though and I wouldn't call it disconnected, it's just a different feel. The power is incredible (especially compared to the 170hp in the SC), turn in is very precise, brakes are fantastic and it's a pretty easy car to drive fast. Sean

Take the caliper off and rebuiid it. Rebuild kits available from our host for about $20 each. Compressed air helps to pop out pistons. Clean thoroughly, put in new seals, reassemble (get piston orientation right). and put back on car.

What Keith said: They are an easy job to do. Might as well do 'em all while in there. If one is sticking, the others probably will start soon.

Yes a rebuild is a good idea. Just be sure to get the pistons in the correct orientation relative to the rotation of the rotor.

speaking of 20 degrees, I thought I read that uneven wear is a possible result from not being in the correct postion? piston I mean

Sean, I'm partway through caliper rebuild (all 4) on my 78 SC and I've found a couple of sticking pistons - probably no surprise with the car having sat for a few years. I'll bet that's what you've got too. Can't wait to finish mine up and see how much better it stops than before.

I've been thinking about doing an upgrade since this car is mainly for the track. If it needs a rebuild I might go ahead and do the upgrade. Thanks for the info.

This could also be a result of bad flex lines.

Uneven pad wear, side-to-side, in a particular caliper could be due to rust/corrosion on the spreader spring plate or pins that retain the pads in the caliper, or stuck piston in one side of caliper ...
It is not likely to be a flex line issue, or pads on both sides of that caliper would have been affected! The piston's 20° angle 'notch' usually affects how much 'wedge' wear pattern there is, leading-edge to trailing-edge.
