Carbon fiber hardtop?

You want a light top? How about one in carbon fiber?

The guy who makes them for me (tried to) make one in carbon fiber. His marching orders included vaccum bagging it. He decided not to for some reason, and now laments wasting 8 yards of cloth. The carbon lifted away from the mold in a few spots, and 'shifted' in a couple others. It's not a complete waste - the issues in question can be fixed with standard bodywork methods, but it's not piece that you would use 'raw'. I'll be selling it as a blem.

Anyway, it's 10lbs as it sits in these pix. Hopefully the new one gets laid up next week.

Wonder if he could make a one piece targa top out of cf? That would look sweet.

They've been shipping for a few weeks now: http://www.rennlight.com/hardtop/

What does the FG version weigh?
A smidgeon under 18lbs, bare. I imagine when the CF top in these pix gets trimmed out, it will be around 9.

do you have any Speedster roofs in the works?
Not at this time.

Thom , if you look closely at the pics of the c/f targa top you can see a small black strip at the egdes of the top. They tape off the mold and shoot a gel coat layer about 1/2 " wide and then do the lay up. When pulled from the mold the black gel coat covers all the rough and crooked edges of the c/f for a very finished look. You might look into this.

cf targa top

That look pretty nice but whats up with that large gap along the roll bar?

The single biggest problem with my targa is the top fitment along the leading edge. I've spend a ton of time trying to readjust it with and without help. I have narrowed it down to two things: bent top panels and/or front seal. If the cf top would eliminate the panel problem it would then be easier to trim the seal. I have zero water leaks, just some wind noise at +60mph.

Wonder if you can make a roof spoiler w/3rd brake light (993 coupe style) out of cf?

Arrow gap

Thom,
Looking at the pic there is about 1/2" between the trailing edge and the roll bar cover. I believe my top at least fits much closer.

My neighbor has a jap product with a removable top which fits perfectly, and I mean 100%. Why can't...

The company that made my bannana wing used this trick. Actually, the guy who's doing the top layup is doing something similar to this already. The carbon actually wraps around the edges of the top, and the parts of the mold that form the 'bottom' are prepped in black gelcoat. The result is the carbon is visible right to the edge of the top, and the frayed bits are underneath and hidden by the black gelcoat.

I think you're talking about the targa top, not the cab hardtop - that's a question for JMPRO.
