front inner bearing shell removal
Can't seem to get this one out by banging since the constriction in the hub prevents getting the proper drift in. Does freezing the hub help? Any ideas or recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

Bearing races can be removed by running a bead of weld around the race (directly on the race surface) and then letting it cool.
The race will nearly fall out once cooled. This will not hurt the hub whatsoever, it simply shrinks the race. Not for everyone but, if you have a stuck or inaccesible race, it works miracles. |

Grilled them up, huh? I have the same grill so should work just like yours I guess! I don't have a welder so I guess I'll cook them up. Thanks guys!

Put them into the oven at 400deg and then use a sharp drift at the race-edge to get it out.

How do you use a drift in there? Coming from the front side, you can't fit one inside the hub or else I would have abnged this one out like I did for the outer bearing.

It's been a while but on my SC I was able to use a long, sharp drift to get at the edge of the race. (Might have been the outer one)
A picture of your hub/race would help. High heat in an oven would help because the Alu hub would expand more than the steel race.

Well, 20 min at 400 degrees worked great. Just heated it up and used a bearing puller and it came out pretty easy. Thanks all!
What is the procedure for installing new bearings? Bang them in dry with a drift? Use heat or cold? How far in do they go (inner and outer) and can they be pressed in too far? Brian

Brian,
Normally I put the race into the hub as level a possible & use something solid (wood block or piece of aluminum) on top of the race to tap it into the hole. I also spray a little lubricant or WD-40 around the base of the race & the recess in the hub to help it go in. After it is level with the hub, I use a flat punch to tap around the top of the race to seat it. Just be careful not to slip & score the race. If you have something circular that fits the OD of the race to seat it, that would work fine too.

The Bentley SC Repair Manual explains it in detail 401-14.
Get one, you'll love it. And yes, you need to heat the hub again to install the new races with appropriate size round plugs to press them in.

I have the Bentley but must have missed that section. I'll look it up. Does it specify the depth for the bearings? Thanks!

To install: remove any flaws, heat the hub to expand it, and freeze the new races to shrink them, and put it on soft wood.
Grind off a few 'thou of an old bearing and flip it over to us as a driver and (optimally) use a pipe stub on that or a big flat punch on the old race. A chisel may slip and gouge the race or hub. Work even and fast and bottom them out(listen for the ringing). Last edited by john70t; 05-02-2006 at 01:00 PM.. |
