Talking New 911 E 1970 owner

Hi everyone!

I am a new owner of a 1970 911E. It's been my dream to own this car since I was a kid and I managed to make it come true. This last month I've had a huge smile on my face.

Except for the car itself, I have always wanted to be involved in fixing it up as well. I like the fact that the car has frequent issues that need looking into (as long as the don't need a complete restoration of course ). So I've bought a lot of books and I'm stocking up the toolbox and, most importantly, I'll be sticking around here asking the experts lots of questions.

Here are a couple of pix. I'll add more later.

Nice car, congrats. Longhoods are early 911s, years '65-'73, later cars had larger impact bumpers and got a shorter hood because of it.

Welcome.

Lovely. Just lovely. Longhoods are the most beautiful cars ever made IMHO.

So, for the vicarious ones:

I live in Romania and I bought the car in Germany in early June.

As I said earlier, this car has always been a dream of mine so when my financial situation started getting better, I promised myself I would get myself a 40th birthday present. This was a couple of years ago. In April, and at the age of a little over 38, I decided to deliver earlier .

My best friend lives in Munich so I combined it with some business I had there and made the trip. I will leave out the gory details about most of the logistics and bureaucracy that could only have been solved with his help (1 million thanks Billy).

I chose some cars off of mobile.de and studied the ads carefully. I also recruited a mechanic, acquaintance of my friend, to help out in this filtering process. It turned out that only 3 of the cars were near enough to Munich for me to look at in the short amount of time I had and only one of those looked promising. We decided that we should take a look at the promising one first even though it was the furthest away (400km).

To put things in perspective, I flew in Monday night, had business all day Tuesday and half of Wednesday and I had to be back at work the following Monday morning. Unfortunately, when I arrived, I found out that Thursday was a holiday in Germany!

So, off I went, early Friday, mechanic as a copilot, to a village in the middle of nowhere, with a lot of cash in my pocket. Understandably, I was quite stressed . When we got there, they took us to a house and as we were approaching, I saw it parked in the driveway. A truly amazing sight! My knees started trembling. I was thinking to myself "Oh please let it be in good condition". From a short distance this car looks brilliant.

Anyway, the mechanic starts checking it out and it passed the first test. The interior also looked to be in very good condition as well as the engine. We then say we want to take it to a garage so we can look at the underside. This is the point when I first heard the engine: the deep, throaty grumble at low revs and the quick way the revs pick up. Incredible! As the guy was manoeuvering though, the engine stalled a few times when at close to idle. We were following in our own car, it was a great behind to follow , and the exhaust smoke combined with the stalling led the mechanic to the conclusion that the engine needs tuning.

At the garage, it turned out the underside was ok too with only very minor rust and very limited corrosion on the body work. A private talk with the mechanic resulted in my decision to buy. Of course, I only did this after a long haggling session to get a discount of 7% .

I drove back to Munich and although it was without incident, I will never forget it. Monday morning I left Munich for the 1600km drive to Bucharest.

The car does have a few problems, as they do, some of which I've already posted about in here. I'm delighted to be part of this community and hope that one day I'll be able to help as much as I'm sure I will be helped in the beginning.

PS: I also installed the Becker Mexico 7948: expensive but if you've only got MP3s and don't need a CD changer, it's an excellent buy. And it's funny because of the people that have sat in the car, no one has noticed yet that it's new technology without being prompted. They think it's an old stereo!
