Hard shift

Does anyone have any input on a hard shift for a 1984-911? I have trouble, especially when cold, shifting the car into reverse. I have to grind it to get into gear, oddly this goes away when the car warms up.

try putting it in 4th first, then hit reverse. should be nice and smooth then. You might also want to check the adjustment on your clutch cable.

wait for the trans to stop spinning, too. Hold the clutch in for a couple seconds before attempting to shift into reverse.....If it still grinds, then yes you should check your clutch adjustment (which is really easy to do)

I have a G50 and have the exact issue. In the morning it is near impossible to put it into ANY gear. It just so happens that i need reverse, but 1st is also not happening. When the car warms up, you'd never know there was a problem. There is no fluid leaking anywhere either. I wish I could just adjust a cable. hehe.

This is pretty normal for a quick shift into reverse. It is not something to be to worried about. Just get into the habit of using 4th before you hit reverse. Check the clutch cable and have a look at the shift coupler bushings. They are located in the back seat area floor on the hump. Pull the carpet up, undo the four screws and check the bushings. If they are damaged, worn and there is excessive play in the shifter, you might want to take care of that as well. All are inexpensive things to resolve and anything you can do to minimize damage to the gears, the better off you'll be. If you don't know when your tranny oil was changed last, you might want to get that done as well and put in some Swepco. (make sure you analyze the oil coming out of the tranny for metal accumulation which will cause pre-mature bearing wear or failure).

I try to be in reverse already before I start the car.. works easier that way. Otherwise, I wait until the tranny stops spinning (takes a few seconds).

I had the same problem(getting locked out of reverse)....changed the bushings in the shift coupler and didn't have that problem since. The old bushings had some play and the new ones got rid of that problem.
