windshield molding

can the metal molding around the front windshield be removed and replaced without taking out the windshield?

Without bending it? You would have to be pretty smooth. I suppose it could be done, but it would not be easy. Then I am not sure how you would get it back in. In all honesty it is really difficult to get it out (un-damaged) without cutting the windshield seal with a utility knife and then carefully pulling it out. As motivation to be careful it costs like 75 dollars per piece so you are looking at 150 bucks worth of parts if you wreck it.

Good Luck
Rich

So you should replace the molding when you replace the windshield is that correct.? I am going to put a new windshield in soon so I could cut the rubber seal while it is on the car and remove the molding and have it anodized or plated and then have the glass installer put the whole thing back into the car

I took mine out while it was in the car - very carefully. I was having some rust repaired in the lower corners of the A pillars. While you have yours out check for rust and get it fixed while you can. I wanted to take the pieces out and off to the powder coaters before the windshield was out. Everything came out great.

what did you use to take it out and when you had it powder coated did it increase the size enough to make it hard to install?

so do you install the rubber around the windshield and then the molding and put the assembly in the car?

speedman,
I don't remember what I used to get it started, I think it was a little plastic prying tool I've had forever. Try a butter knife wrapped in masking tape. Remove the center clips, start in the middle and work your way out. Don't worry about chewing up the rubber, you ought to replace that anyway.

The powder coating is very thin (and tough as nails!). If you're worried about putting it back in youself, find a glass guy with experience "roping" in windshields. Either a Porsche shop or an olr VW shop should be able to recommend someone.

If you do bend it up a little, you can use the windshield (minus the seal) as a template to bend it back in shape.
