Jeff: Generally, with both wheels off the ground, turn one wheel and if the other one turns in the same direction, you have LSD.
If the other side doesn't move, or turns the other way, it's a regular differential. That's how I understand it.

Or rev it to about 6K, dump the clutch, and if it leaves 2 black marks you have LSD.

Just make sure the trans is in neutral when you do this.

If the trans is in gear, even an LSD will turn the other wheel the opposite direction, (but with resistance) since LSD's also have spider gears.

wow, this is like the best 915/ZF ID thread ever...

when I had my first 911 (a '76 S) I did the turn wheel trick. The other wheel didn't do a thing. One day after taking care of some drivability problems my friend drove and tried dumping the clutch @ 3k rpms or so. This left two marks on the road, which left me dumbfounded...

"burn rubber", then get out and look at your rear wheels marks on the road surface. If rubber mark on both whel, you do have it. If one, then you don't.

Guys, some of us are real funny and sarcastic - if you don't know that - please don't try the 6K rpm clutch drop or burn rubber test bacause it could turn out really expensive...
