Clean-up inside the left fender on SC and Carrera
 

Highly recommended because of possible rust damage.
Remove left front wheel.
Disconnect clamp underneath windshield washer tank.
Remove bolt on top of tank; leave washer-tank in place.
The expansion tank for fuel evaporation sits on top of the windshield washer tank; it has two lines top and bottom.
If these lines need replacing, don't bother with the rusty clamps, just cut the lines with side cutters so you can wiggle the expansion tank free. This tank is only fastened by being hooked into a U-shaped small bracket welded to the lamp bucket.
You'll see once you remove the evaporator tank.
Remove the old line-pieces from tank and corresponding steel lines on the body.
Using a light, take a good look at the area. You'll notice that there is a larger bracket welded to the body with a trough on top that's full of dirt and rust. A long srewdriver will clean that out.
The U-shaped smaller bracket on top of the lamp bucket will need cleaning and repainting.
This area is congested and has given rust-problems for some.
I used a new 1/8" line for the top, and a 3/8" line for the bottom of the evaporator tank.
If you need to replace lines for the washer tank, this is the time.
Fortunately, mine was in pretty good shape, just a lot of dirt, so, after a clean-up, I used old oil brushed on for some rust-protection of these hard to reach parts.

Unfortunately you are too true on this. On mine, the trough collecting all the dirt actually rust completely through the inner wing so that all the wiring going through this section has rusted out. In addition, the a/c lines that run along the top of the inner fender also gather dirt/moisture and on mine also rusted out the outer fender where it bolts to the inner fender. I have to get the old metal cut out around the bumper shock support/inner fender near the batter and get new stuff welded in as well as get a new driver side fender!

Hope no one else has it this bad, but I couldn't believe how much dirt came out of this area that Gunter describes!

Gunter is right on the money. I pulled my washer bottle and found the bracket completely packed with dirt. Fortunately, no rust.
