shift rod seal on 915 transmission

The shift rod seal on my 1973 original 915 transmission is starting to seep fluid. Is there a way to replace or refurbish this seal without pulling the transmission?

Thanks

Fred

piece of cake.

disconnect the shift bushing. climb under car, with various picks and tiny screwdrivers you are willing to sacrifice. and poke, gouge, pick.... it out. it will be creepy, because this project definately has that "point of no return" feel to it. and it is right at the beginning. but it will come out. then simply run the new one over the shaft from inside the car, and push on. first project ever on a 911. careful, i ordered the part from pelican maybe $8, and they shipped it to me for another $8. basically order more stuff

Seal puller tool

Yes,

I fabricated a tool to do this, but I have a lot of patience.......

It was made from a piece of 1/2" cast iron pipe about 6" in length, and has a tapered thread on one end. The shift coupler in the tunnel is disconnected and the "tool" is slipped over the shift rod and screwed into the seal. Then a holding tool (pair of vise-grips) is clamped on the pipe, and tapped on until the seal is pulled out.

Then a new seal can be tapped into place using the opposite end of the pipe tool, just the reverse of the pulling process.
