Overheating

hi,

my 82 SC seems to be overheating. on a short town drive at normal speeds my temp was reaching the upper white temp mark, when i got out i could smell oil burning off the engine (leaking return pipes). i've no doubt that it would rise further on a longer trip.

the oil is at the correct level and the engine has a new and properly adjusted fan belt, and i haven't lost a rag in the engine.

i'm not sure what else might be causing this?

any thoughts most welcome

regards

justin

Put your hand on the metal oil lines on the passenger side of the car down near the rocker panel. If they don't seem warm, your thermostat is not opening and will probably be the first thing to look at,

Have you checked the timing or changed it recently? A improperly timed engine has a dramatic effect.

The first thing that I would look at is to check and make sure that my engine mounted oil cooler was clean. Caked on oil and dirt can cause the efficiency of the oil cooler to decrease. Second I would check the thermostat(s). There is one on the engine, and the second one is in the rear fender behind the passenger side door. I've heard that you can check the engine mounted thermostat by taking it out and placing it on a hot plate to see what temperature it opens at. I've never done this though so take it with a grain of salt. Those are my ideas
