Exact location of 1987 Carrera badge

I asked this on another thread and no one seemed to know. So, I'll make it a topic unto itself.

Okay, does anyone know the exact location as in "centered and x inches below rear wing base"? I bought my car with a repaint where the PO never put a new badge on it.

Thanks.

It is specified in the factory shop manuals. If no one beats me to it, I can look it up later.

I thought there was no Carrera script at all when the car was equipped with a wing.

My 87 had the wing (I have killed it), with the script.

My 87 had a turbo tail with one script under the tail (non-turbo decklid) and a second script below the tail where you could see it... these days I have a plain decklid - no script, no tail...

On the Factory wide-body cars with the tea tray wing, Porsche shipped them without the Carrera badging. Some dealers added them prior to sale and some did not. I don't know if the script was deleted for the factory Carrera wing.

Wasn't this debated at length once before? IIRC, some insisted that their wide body was factory delivered with script...some without....

RickM,

My understanding is that they were shipped without, and that some dealers would attach them before putting them out in the showroom, but I vaguely remember the debate you mentioned. Given how badly the M491 options was documented by Porsche, anything is possible. I do know that my car came without the Carrera badge, and it was added by a PO when the car was about 10 years old.

yngwie1,

But back to the original question about badge placement, I went out and measured mine, and it is in the center of the hood, with the bottom of the badge gasket exactly 83 mm from the front edge of the hood. If no one else provides it, I will try to remember to look it up in the factory manual tonight.

Thanks for the info, but just for clarification, when you say hood you are referring to the rear decklid, right?

No, I measured the OTHER G** D*** badge. @#&*$ I had a *@&#^$ neuronal misfire %&@*#! LSD flashback!!!...never mind.

My CARRERA badge is on the REAR of the car (the one with the motor) and the bottom of the emblem is exactly 3.5 inches (89 mm) from the bottom edge of the rear decklid. The car was sold without the badge, but it was installed at a Porsche dealer about 10 years after purchase. I cannot find my factory service manuals (My bookcases have been boxed up for redecorating) so I cannot verify that the placement is exactly correct. It looks right, though.

Please excuse my senior moment.

Senior moments are always excused. :-)

Much obliged. I'll measure it, look at it and likely apply it this weekend after a fresh wash. It has been bugging me to no end that it isn't there. I know some like it off, but that scripting is too sexy to leave off IMHO.

Thanks again!

All standard Carreras, with or without wings had the Carrera badging, but there was a factory option to delete it.

The subject of Carrera badging on M491 Factory Widebody 911s was discussed in great detail on the small Yahoo Turbo Look site.
We found documentation stating that the early Turbo Looks, from '84 to '86 were all manufactured with no Carrera badging from the factory.
In 1987 the 911s got many small revisions, including H7 headlights and a different rear center reflector. I believe that Porsche started adding the Carrera badging on M491 Factory Widebodys in 1987.
On the Turbo Look website I asked if anyone who was the original owner of an '87 to '89 had purchased the car with no Carrera badging from the factory. No one did, but it's a small site.

The Tail on a standard Carrera is different than on a Widebody Turbo Look 911.
There is more space on a standard Carrera between the base of the tail and the bottom edge of the rear decklid. Because there is more space the Carrera badge is in a different place, a bit more centered in the space.
Carreras without tails had the badge in yet another position, closer to the engine lid grill.

I have a couple of photos which might help. the first is with no tail from an '85. Sorry, no measurements for you:

The second is my '84 with Carrera tail and the bottom of the letter "r" is 10.5cm (4 1/4") above the lip of the cover

I couldn't see in your post if you had a rear wing or if it is a widebody. Hope this helps at least visually

My '88 was delivered from the factory without the Carrera emblem, and it is an official factory option code although I don't recall the specific code. If anyone wants to know the option code, I can look it up later...

My tail was a dealer install. Badge is 81mm up from the lid edge & centered.
