VIN locations for Euro (RoW) cars?
In reading a previous thread, a post peaked my interest. Where are correct VIN locations for Euro (RoW) cars? I did a search and understand that there is one next to the smugglers box. The VIN tag in question (in my car) is located in the 'conventional' location, on the dash, in the drivers side corner of the windshield. Could it have been placed there when it was Federalized, or was it placed there by a previous owner?
Thanks, Mike

Mine had a VIN plate in the dash as well. It came unglued, though. There is a tag on the driver's door jamb and in the front trunk.

When the Euro or ROW cars are Federalized a vin plaque is usually glued to the dash or the A pillar on the drivers side.

There are a number of half-truths floating around here on this thread..
ALL 911 cars ( at least through/including mid-80's and such) will show a VIN on a raised portion of the truink floor next to the smugglers box. During the build process, the "chassis" will not "know" whether or not it will be mated to ROW or USA/Japan spec cars...so *this* location will always show the "ZZZ" in the middle...like the proper ROW VIN numbers shown elsewhere on the car, if meant for ROW. For USA..the proper VIN is riveted on the A-pillar and is also shown as a sticker in the door jamb. The USA cars will show "ABO" where the ZZZ is shown in the smugglers box. Not to worry, they won't match. This is for officially imported cars into the USA through proper distribution channels....and has NOTHING to do wiht being Federalized by second-hand shops. Perhaps second hand shops do this too...but be aware that "official" cars are done this way..... Wil

I understand how the US cars are 'tagged'. I was just curious why my RoW's VIN plate wasn't mounted on the A pillar like all of the US cars. Instead it was mounted on the dash. From what I'm reading, the VIN plates in RoWs that are later Federalized and imported in to the US are mounted in one of two locations (the dash or the A pillar). Is this correct?
FWIW, my car was brought over and Federalized by Brumos in '85. I have a photocopy of it's papers w/ my owners manual. Thanks again for the info.!

Not sure what part of this thread has a number of half-truths about the Euro - RoW cars like the question asked in the first place.
I have 6 euro cars that were federalized here in the US and 5 have vin plate on the A pillar and 1 has it mounted/glued to the dash. About 20 years ago I use to buy all the take off parts from a company that was federalizing cars and all the 911's they were working on had the vin plate mounted on the A pillar. There are other locations for the vin but I'm only talking about the A pillar and in some cases the dash mounting. Brumos side note: I was restoring some parts on a 74 RSR and was sanding down a RSR rear tail and found out it was from a Brumos race car. Most of the parts was from John Paul Jr.'s car and I was really surprised to find Brumos paint underneath.

It felt great actually because I remember the Brumos car really well. I do have some pics but I will need to find them and scan them. It was in 1997 that I discovered this and back then didn't own a digital camera.

Very cool! If you can find the pics and scan them, I'm sure some of us would be appreciative! I'd love to see them.
