Advice needed on hoisting an engine
 

I've got a 83 Euro Turbo engine sitting on the garage floor that I want to hoist using my cherry picker. Does anyone have any advice on doing so? I have some chains and hd rachetting tie down straps but don't know where and how to hook up to for balance and to avoid damaging tin and what not.

Isn't there a round lifting eyehook on the top of the bell housing? If there is, that's what its for. If not you can probably get one.

Should be a round eyehook at the trans side. I put two eyebolts in the rear engine mount thus making it a 3-point lift.

The transmission is in the shop.

How are they doing it here?

The lift eye on the front of the engine (near the breather housing) can rarely be used (especially with a turbo) if the induction system is installed on the engine. Leave the rear engine mount attached (or reattach) and attach engine stand yoke to front (flywheel end) of engine. Put an eye-bolt in each engine mount tube and attach a shackle to the yoke; make a three-arm spreader and attach with drop chains to eye-bolts and shackle and lift with engine hoist (or if your "cherry picker" has enough elevation capability just use a three-legged lift sling). Slide engine stand onto yoke and lower crane to transfer engine weight to stand.

Depending on how much you like your back, we hooked up the engine stand first and then lifted the engine up letting the stand swing back underneath the engine. Watch the shins :)

My cherry picker came with an engine balancing bar. Three chains are to hold the motor. On one end of the engine balance bar goes on chain that connects to the back of the motor where there is a eyehook. On the other end of the engine balance bar, 2 chains are used. One to each of the bolts on the engine support bar.
