Front engine? looks pretty badass - almost looks ferrari-ish. Are they aiming at a performance car like the 456 or more of a gt like a jaguar?

Aston Martin wannabe. Just another generic big dollar GT, just like the F-car 560, the big Jag and others. So what does Porsche bring to the party? What are they going to do differently? It's going to have a water cooled, front mounted V-engine (like the others), room for 2+2, 160+ MPH top speed, lots of electrical do-dads, and weigh about ~3800 lbs or more. (Yawn) Besides, style-wise it seems too "heavy" to be a Porsche to me.
Call me an old fashioned purist. Porsche developed the 911 as a counter-point to thinking like that. The result was a compact (but roomy), light, fast and efficient car that was miles ahead of the contemporary Ferrari 330's and 365 GTC's, A-M DBS's and other GT's of the late 60's. I'm not against them developing a new GT (a la 928), but for goodness sake -- DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!!

Wow--that would be an awesome daily driver to go with my 997 cup track car. Where did the pic originate?

Looks like the latest stupid-pretentious offering from Japan. That car could easily pass for a Nissan or a Toyota. It could also be easily made into a wagon. That sure as hell isn't a sports car.

JonT - the pic is originally from www.pcnasource.com
Porschenut - and all you other haters of what Porsche has done the last couple of years, I have one question for you. Do you know of one car company that successfully only produced one model and are as profitable as Porsche. Remember Porsche almost went under in the early 90’s because all they had for the most part was the 911. Face it Porsche was not making what the market wanted. Porsche is in business to make money! Just to let you know that Cayenne is 50% of Porsches sales. Without that income from those "horrible" vehicles like the Boxster, Cayenne and the Cayman, Porsche would never have had the budget for the Carrera GT. And I don't know anyone who does not think that is a great car. You all need to relax, Porsche has some great things on the horizon they are just doing what it takes to meet market demands.

I agree with CEO, aka Kenneth. I wouldn't buy a Cayenne but that doesn't mean to me that Porsche shouldn't make it. I do think that the non-S, non-Turbo Cayenne should not have happened. I know they sell a lot of them, but Porsche is a high-performance vehicle company. Leave the big, heavy, underpowered SUV to everyone else.
How about if this "new" 928 turns out to be only 3,500 lbs and will run rings around the Aston Martin, etc.? That wouldn't be too bad. Just my $0.02.

I wish they NEVER did the SUV thing. The Boxster and the Cayman, OK, but not a SUV! But if that kept their head above water to make more 911s I guess I have to live with it. Don't like it but oh well, I'm not going to loose any sleep over it.
As for this 928, I like it. Don't think I would buy one, but I think it looks pretty sweet. I'm sold on 911/930s from '80s. If I got anything newer it would be a '96-'98 993.

CEO - I agree with you 100%. If Porsche is going to remain viable, they have to have several offerings that will weather any market swings in style and apointments. I like the new 928 alot as I do the GT. I have driven the Boxter and found it a ton-o-fun but wouldn't buy it cuz it ain't my cup of tea. I like the fact that Porsche is doing what it has to to please many and not sacrifice on some really great ideas. I wish they would have a bit more involvement in the Porsche's of the past is my only gripe - I don't know whatthey would do but guys that own 356's and 914';s as well as all the old 911's out there need some Porsche love as well. Maybe a 25% off discount on the purchasde of a new one if you already have one?

Bring it on. Porsche needs to enter the high end:
Luxury performance coupe segment - a la Ferrari, Aston 4 door segment of the same type Looks like they are thinking of both - ! Panamera and this....

The back end looks like a mid 90s prelude from that angle. I think they should have made it a 4 door and gone full on sport lux sedan.
I agree that they have to produce multiple models to be a healthy company and if they keep making thinkgs like 997 GT3 cup cars, I'm all for it.

The tough thing to live with is that EVERY NEW design seems to smash down the B- pillar whether we like it or not. So, visibility is down the toilet - which is 75% of enjoying ANY car like a 911 BTW.
Perhaps, there is no choice anymore in the matter. New car = pushed down B pillar. All that development and engineering is partailly wasted if certain fundamentals are missing - i.e, like a roomy cockpit. |

What ever happened to the wonderful German design cadre that made cars like the 911 and Beetle so...Teutonic? Everything is looking the same anymore - American, Asian and European cars are becoming generically bland in appearance. The individualized style elements that used to give cars a soul and identity from a distance are disappearing. As for the performance and comfort? For $150,000+ how could a company fail to deliver? It's just not my cup of tea.
I'll bet Porsche could do better to get a dozen maniacal Pelicans, pay them in beer and spare 911 parts and have them come up with an inherently better design and not spend a decade poring over the details. My 2 pfennig.
