removing a/c and how to plug holes?
I have a 1976 911s. I'm pulling all the A/C stuff that the dealer installed. Yes, all of it is for sale, if you'd like... ;) anyway, we had a big debate at work on how to plug the holes, particiularly the small ones in the wheel wells left by the clamps that held the plumbing running from the condensor in the front to the compressor in the back.
Here was some of the debate/suggestions from work today: - pop rivet the holes then cover with a spray on underbody coating (issue, dissimilar metals, rust?) - go to local hardware store and get some rubber grommets and drill hole size to fit grommet - Tig -well, don't have a welder, nor the skill or talent! - screws back in with rubber washers (have seen that on on here) Obviously the big holes left behind (cut in upper floorboard on passanger side needs some metal with RTV or something like it) Thoughts? As a side note, I already love the look with the A/C removed, knowing I still have to get knee pads installed! |
There's a related thread going on right now.... FWIW, I commented on that thread that I plugged all the hose clamp screw holes (wheel wells and underneath) with JB Weld. I was careful and made sure it was a smooth patch, and the JB Weld is close enough to the color of my car (Diamond Blue Metallic) so that they are hardly noticable. Hope this helps....

Thanks a bunch. It seems like the same discussion we were having at work! I think I'll end up going with JB weld on the little holes and plugs for the larger ones! As for the really large ones, i.e., the cut from the drivers upper floor panel to the smugglers box, that'll have to get metal!
