Turbo in non-turbo engine

Is there any possibility of adding a turbo to a non-turbo porsche 911 engine? I'm looking between 1986 and 1989. Is this even a good idea? Just getting into this so bear with me if this is a stupid question.

Yes I have an 89 with a Protosport set up. Call prototech he is in Cali and speak to Todd. Also do a search

greglepore 05-11-2006 12:41 PM

Its a wonderful idea-search Protomotive or Protosport.

Keep in mind its a slippery slope.

Yes, it's a great upgrade. Now, if I could just afford that 930 gearbox...

Absotively! This has been done by numerous members on this Forum, including me. I have a kit for sale if you're interested ;)

Without touching the engine internals, you can extract 400HP @ 0.7bar of boost (intercooled of course). Otherwise, approx 340-360HP @ 0.5bar, non-intercooled

You're better off getting a tougher G50 based car for future upgrades. They'll pretty much handle anything you throw at them ;)

Their prices seem terribly expensive.

gotta pay to play :D

how much hp can an 85' 915 handle? i have a few garrett t03's laying around.......if i could get 250-300hp easily out of my 3.2 i'd be VERY happy :D

WydRyd 05-11-2006 04:36 PM

The 915 will handle that, and more, easily. It all comes down to how you treat the box. Be gentle and it will handle that power easily.

bell 05-11-2006 04:44 PM

very interesting :D
my 915 is currently being rebuilt......so i should be good to go.
time to start looking into all the little stuff to see if i can make it work......i have a gaggle of different intercoolers laying around too :D

greglepore 05-11-2006 05:17 PM

To3 is marginal, T03/4 is better. You'd get 300 hp easily even with a T03.You'll need a rising rate fpr and a chip, the chip is the problem unless you could care less about intellectual property and are willing to just burn someone else's.

MB911 and Souk are both working on systems less expensive than Proto's. MB thinks his price will be substantially less than Proto's, we'll see.

Proto isn't really outrageous if you look at what you'd pay at retail to assemble your own system; if you can bend/flange pipe and can do the chip, then yeah, its pricey, but not many folks can do that.

As to what the 915 will handle, 400 hp seems to be no problem unless you're into drag racing; the lag itself protects the trans on the street unless you don't respect mechanical things generally.

WydRyd 05-11-2006 05:41 PM

Proto typically uses a T04B type setup in their systems. Their fabrication work is of a very high quality. You get what you pay for that's for sure.

Either way, a blown 3.2 will put a smile on your face. try to hook up with a member on this Forum who's done the conversion and you'll see first hand what it's like.

Has anybody in the Calif Bay Area or nearby done it?

RarlyL8 05-11-2006 06:00 PM

If you are currently rebuilding your 915 now is the time to add some bolt-on strength. The WEVO twin bearing retainer and a reinforced side cover are good to have. A posi unit is very good protection due to the torque being spread to both axles.

I'm sure there is someone on this board near there, or you can take a drive to Protomotive in CA if it's not too far from where you are? Todd Knighton is a top bloke.

I notice you have a M491 Turbo-look! Cool. You already have the, G50 box, 930 turbo brakes and turbo tail, ready to accommodate a full length intercooler

MW4904 05-11-2006 07:15 PM

It's actually a conversion, done when I bought it. I currently have it for sale unless I can talk myself out of it. Todd moved out of Calif,Arkansas I believe last year.

Ptoscano 05-11-2006 07:23 PM

I guess if you knew what a turboed 3.2 felt like you would not be contemplating selling. Right Merv....

Since my conversion I have clocked about 800 spirited miles.....and the smile just doesn't leave my face. Be prepaired to drop some serious coin as once you do the turbo then come the big brakes, suspension...etc...

MW4904 05-11-2006 07:39 PM

You're probably right!

I am going the other way. Tackling all the breaks, suspension etc in preparation for a bigger engine. I just have not decided yet what way I will go. I will have to do a (minimum) top-end job first before I can stick a turbo on my 3.0. Based on what that will cost, I don't know if I would do better to get a replacement 930 or 3.6 block??
