Top end rebuild cost?

I need a top end rebuild done on my '87 911. What have you guys been quoted or charged for having this done? I want to know what to expect pricewise.
Thanks

Why do you need a top end rebuild?

clay1g 05-12-2006 04:19 AM

Engine is using a lot of oil, from one quart to one and-a-half quarts per tank of gas. The engine sounds like it's running on 5 cylinders because one of the spark plugs has been fouled probably because the valve guide has leaked so much oil.

...it depends, but I would say the minimum would be around $6,000.

Mine was $6,000 18 months ago. The car ('87) ran noticeably better afterward.

Do what?! $6k?! What would be the breakdown on that figure?

Could you not just rehab the heads (guides, valves, clean up), put 'em back on and see how she goes? Maybe check specs on one or two cylinders while you're in there?

Sorry to butt in, just shocked at the figure after reading Wayne's books.

3K for just a top end - maybe 3500 depending on the amount of valves being replaced. $6K bleah!

Yep...$6K for a topend rebuild is too much. If you are going to pay $6K, ship your engine to me with a check for $6K, and I'll return your engine with a new set of wheels! (that's my way of saying I can rebuild you engine for less and you'll have money left over for a new set of cool wheels :D)

Heads can be R&R to stock for $500-$700. If you don't need any other new parts (e.g. cylinders), that'll be the largest "parts" cost. The rest are necessary seals and labor.

Now if you upgrade some of the parts (e.g. cams and springs), figure another $1000 to your parts cost.
