hot engine

I have had my 73 911 stored for the last two years, took it out from time to time to get the engine hot. changed the oil, cleaned the air cleaners, and took it out for a good two hour tour. Engine temp went all the way to 230 and stayed there. I normally see 180 on the temp gauge and this was bothering me a lot. Why would this happen? could it be the thermostat? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Was it fine when you parked it?

Here's a few things to check.

Fins on the oil cooler. Clean them out if they are plugged up with gunk.

Oil lines run down by the jack tube that may have been crushed by improper or harsh jacking.

Thermostat is possibility.

Maybe your temp sensor is faulty or taking faulty readings.

This is a tough one. Let us know what it is when you find it.

If all else fails install a cool collar and that'll fix all your overheating issues!

did you change the oil weight? Going from 10-30 to 20-50 will bring the temps up.

You know...I have to say something here because that is where mine runs normally. It never sits at 180 unless is really cool outside...like winter cool. I live in NM and mine is always at 210 to 230...always. I don't know that it's not normal. I've read a few things about it and it doesn't say that 230 is overly hot. I even have an external cooler.

I might add that I drove it to San Deigo through the desert in 110 degree heat from NM and then all the way back again and it almost reached 250. But it runs awesome!
