engine/tranny drop question
I am dropping the engine and tranny on my 82 sc. My question relates to balance points of the combined unit. Best point to put jack and whether or not I should have a jack for the transmission end.
I have two furniture carts to hold the combined unit once I get it out. My main concern relates to lowering the transmission end after I have the engine all the way down. Do I unbolt the transmission mount, while supported, and lower the engine? Then lowering the transmission end to the cart? The whole unit will move so I am assuming that I should have another hydraulic jack on wheels? I envision the mount acting as a pivot point which will create undue stress on either the plate or the transmission. I have read and re-read Wayne's book and looked at postings yet am a bit concerned about this. Any words of wisdom? Thanks, Kirk |
Just did mine.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=263300&perpage=20&pagenumb er=2 Picture in there showing how I had the car jacked up. The entire lump is lowered together. 2 jacks is best. 1 jack between sump plate and transmission and the other at the transmission. When supported, pull the 4 mount bolts. As it starts to come down, roll the jacks towards the rear of the car so the shifting shaft comes out of the tunnel. Watch for the engine blower on the rear valance tin. Once out and clear, lower to the floor. You will need about 32 inches between the floor and the rear valance to get the engine/transmission to clear. What I did was to get the car up fairly high on jack stands and then drop the front of the car to get the necessay room at the back. I was surprised at how much can be gained at the rear when you drop the front. Good luck. |
Charlie,
Thanks for the thread and pointers. Stupid question number 1: how the heck do I attach a picture in my relies? I see the tab for the initial new thread but nothing for the replies. Thanks again, I'm off to the neighbors place for jack number two. Kirk |
tag the "Click here to Upload a photo" link. It's that easy.

This is my 2.7 and '72 transaxle on my ATV jack with a 24"x36" piece of 1/2" plywood. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1147582987.jpg
This is a perfectly stable platform. I put a 2x4 under the transaxle to give a little nose up attitude going back in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1147583110.jpg Easy one man remove and install. |
mmm. i use two guys, two jacks. one under the tranny, and one under the sump. well on lumber between the exchangers. two eyes catch bonehead mistakes, plus you can blame each other. then lower to two furn dollies. that way you can remove the jack under the motor.

Heres a few pics
