Lowering the engine COG

One of the "tricks" some local racers use on another class of cars here is to lower the gas tanks and their engines by inserting 1/2 inches of stacked washers or spacers underneath the engine brackets. "Thay" say it moves the center of gravity down...I would be concerned about additional leverage on the bolts but again "they" use gr12 bolts and report no problems.

This is on some Holdens, not seen on any 911s.

Anyone do this, any problems and any perceptible benefits? It would seem the shift linkage would be OK b/c of the coupler and I have room underneath with my headers...

Is this done assuming that the ride height has been lowered to its Maximum? The ride height lowering would make more sense to me. lowering engine/tranny how would that affect axel angles

Yes, ride height already at lowest settings with front spoiler ~1.5 inches off the deck.

I'd have to wonder about changing the angle of the shifting coupler and if that would affect the trans?

It would make more sense to me to lighten the rear and/or add weight to the front to balance the car better. 911's are rear end heavy and I think a balanced front and rear would benefit a little more than lowering the engine.

Nice. Are you able to take up the corresponding length in the shifter purely through screwing down (shortening) the shifter linkage or did you have to replace the shift rod or otherwise?

Sorry Chuck! ;-)

John,
My car was already modified when I got it. The cross bar had extensions welded on to move the engine forward. I put the spacer in to eliminate the twisting moment on the cross bar.
The car is a B@ST@RD so it is hard to tell what all was required to make this move. The chassis is '69, the engine and tranny are '84, the suspension is different.
I had to do alot of mods to extend the rear engine tin back to the gasket.
