Strange VIN location, help needed?

I saw a car with the front trunk VIN stamped to the right of the normal raised area, on the thin area behind the gas tank. There was no evidence anything had ever been stamped in the normal raised rectangle. It's an SC, anybody have any insight on this?

I wish I could help you but I have been around 911's and 930's for about 20 years and haven't seen anything like that before. Have any pics?

I'll try and get one this weekend and post it. It really didn't look to be tampered, there would be the sense of putting it in the wrong place and blanking out the normal location.

My US spec 83 has the VIN stamped right next to the raised rectangle too, on the driver side.

Yes, directly behind the tank, close to the centerline of the car. About 6 inches directly to the right of the raised rectangle where they are usually stamped.

I can't get pics, the car sold. But this is kind of a curious thing, we now have 2 folks that have seen this in their cars from the same era. But I've seen plenty of earlier and later cars that all had it stamped on the raised rectangle.

Any theories? The factory VIN stamper guy hitting Hofbrau too hard during the early 80s?
