Turbo cool down - Turbo timer

What do you guys do to facilitate the 2 min turbo cool down after driving?

Has anyone used any of the aftermarket timers? IF so which is best?

I leave it running and time it....

The last mile or two of driving, I stay out of the boost and drive like a granny. Then I idle for a minute or so. Never had to replace a turbo yet.

You mean at the track??? Or just motoring around to the mall and Starbucks for latte???

Emission 05-16-2006 07:15 AM

On the streets, and at the track, I just drive without the turbo for the last five minutes (cool down lap at the track). It's pretty easy to do if you are conscience about it.

tsuter,

Both. Obviously the track would get a more thorough cool down, for the turbo and the brakes. Still, street usage gets a gentle warm-up and gentle driving before shut-down. Not a bad philosophy with all cars, turbo or not.

That's the whole point.....you don't need it...for track or latte runs...

tsuter 05-16-2006 08:25 AM

Of course I have advocated one of these for the DIY twin setups running KO3s or equivalents...

SO let me be sure i am straight, if i stay outta the turbo it does not need cool down? I am hardly on it anyway, so i should just be able to turn the car OFF as soon as i am stopped? I thought you had to let it idle no load for 1 min or so either way?

Also, i mean around town etc. I go to the store form home 4 mile trip or so and i gatta sit there and wait for the 1min, kinda annoying, would rather have a timer, then i could jump out right away and not be hassled with cool down etc...

Emission 05-16-2006 11:05 AM

When the turbo is compressing air, it is getting HOT. If you aren't using boost, than you aren't compressing air... and the turbo just gets up to normal exhaust-type temps. No big deal.

I have never had to "wait" for mine to cool down - I just drive mellow the last mile or so. It's better to have the cool air blowing over everything anyway (rather that idle while parked).

Ditto! If I've been driving it a bit hard, I just take it easy the last 1-2km's before reaching my final destination and then just turn it off and walk away. Otherwise I just turn it off and not worry about it. I drive my car daily, in traffic, so I don't get that much opportunity to drive it into full boost anyway.

"That" my friends is a VW afterrun coolant pump thermostated at 95C to pump coolant thru the turbo jacket for 3-5 minutes after motor shutdown. For small turbos having both oil and water fittings like VWs 1.8T Golf, GTi, Turbo Beetle....KO3, KO4 turbos.

Um, where do you find the coolant on a 930?

Another alternative is a turbo After-Oiler

Cooling down your turbo is really not a problem for a street car.
The only time you would ever run on boost and immediately shut down is when there are red lights in your rear view. If that is a normal deal for you then you need a timer. :D

I did. Repeatedly.

You said "...For small turbos having both oil and water fittings like VWs 1.8T Golf, GTi, Turbo Beetle...."

You used the word "and" not "or"... which means it needs coolant on one side.
