Where do I place jack stands?
Where is the best place to put jack stand to lift the front of the car?

Slant, beautiful car! I highly highly recommend you purchase Wayne Dempsey's (the creator of this site) 101 Projects for your Porsche book. It will save you hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in not screwing up your beautiful machine....It tells you the dos and don'ts o Porsche ownership. You can normally buy one used either in the PP classifieds or on E-bay or buy one new from our host. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Did I say I recommend the book? I wake up sometimes at night and just read it even though I have plans to perform most of the projects. EDIT: I mean no plans to perform most of the projects-- FREUDIAN SLIP....

jack point can be, front of the torsion bars (front corners of A-arms), normal jock point behind the front wheels, and forward of rear wheels. Someone said the cross member can be a jack point too. I did it once but was scared that I break the cross member since it's aluminum.

The book by Dempsey is fantastic and a must have source of reference, however he recommends “the bottom engine sump” as a good place to jack up a 911. Although this thread is about jack stands I would not recommend doing that, there are other places. The owners manual has some helpful information.

are you sure the middle of the front cross member is a good point? I did it several time and crossing my finger since it's aluminum. How about the rear? Is there any suggestion if not the engine's bottom? On the rear, I jack the each arm up and place a stand at the chassis jack point. I rather have a poin to jack at the center of the car so that I don't have to do it twice.

I use two jacks in unison to lift the front of the car. The jack pads are positioned to lift at the front of the A-arm, like everyone says to do.
The jack stands are placed on the aluminum cross member, unless doing suspension work, then at the curve of the inner wheel well, where the firewall, inner fender, and floor all meet to form 3 layers of sheet metal. The jack stands are padded with shop towels taped to the steel harness looking thing. Griots Garage sells some nice padded jack stands. At the rear, I use the engine case (even though the factory and Bentley says NOT to do this) as a lift point. The jack stands are placed at the body below the radius arm pivot point. Lift the front, then the rear. Lower the rear, then the front. |
