Intermittent Wiper
 

I have an '88 911 with intermittent wipers that do not work. I just replaced the relay (911 618 149 01) in the rear of the trunk and still no fix. The wipers now make a clicking noise when rheostat is on while using low medium or high speeds. No sound is heard when steering wheel switch is in off position and rheostat is on. Owner's Manual states "Intermittent wiper action stops when the windshield wiper lever is operated." To me this means intermittent wipers should only work when steering wheel switch is in off position.
Another issue is that wipers work ok in 1-3 positions but will stop in the position they are in when turned off. They do not stop in parked position unless that is when they are turned off. I am already into the project for $140 so where do I go from here? My next guess would be to replace the steering column lever, then the rheostat if that doesn't solve the problem.

Usually it's the lever. If you do a search, you will find out a procedure for this. You can bend the contacts in the lever back into position.

For intermittent wiper action, the wiper switch/stalk must be in the OFF position. Then turn the intermittent knob to the right for the intermittent action. (You may have to turn full left to turn off and then turn to the right to switch it back on). Ignition switch must be ON.

Can't help with your non-parking question. Use the search -- the question of intermittent wipers came up fairly recently.

The relay you need to replace is behind the instruments. This relay controls the intermittent interval and provides the "return" function when you turn the stalk switch off. It can be reached from the trunk or by removing one of the instruments (not sure which one). If your lucky it's the same type relay you already purchased...

Hi all and thanks for the help. I ran a search and it sounds like some pins need to be bent back on the steering wheel switch. I bought a few tools (27MM socket, torque wrench) and will work on the switch tonight. With any luck a repair will fix the problem instead of replacing the lever.

What PaulPorsche said....bend the contacts a little, that is what I had to do to get mine working again. I thought that I was going to have to fork over some cash to get the potentiometer, but there is a thread on here that goes step by step on what you exactly need to do. Actually very easy and quick to do.

I found the thin copper sheets or pins and they were not making contact when the plastic piece pushed on them. After a bit of tinkering I got them to touch. reassembled the switches and it worked as advertised including intermittent feature. One time I was not able to get the wipers to stop without jiggling the lever but the other attempts worked fine. Only time will tell if I need a new lever but for now the problem seems to be solved. Now it is waiting for gaskets in the mail to reassemble the fresh air intake system.
