Engine Stand Size

Buying an engine stand to commence a rebuild of my 2.7 motor.

What size (engine weight capacity) stand should I go for?

Thanks

also get one with 4 wheels as opposed to 3, this will make it more stable when you're spinning it upside down and such.

OK thanks, I am looking at a 1000lb stand with a 4 wheel frame.

The beefier four wheel version will also allow you to get a dolly or a floor jack under the center of the engine whenever the engine goes on or comes off the stand. I bought the 3 leg model and it is plenty stable enough for a 3.2 Carrera motor, its just more of a PITA.

1000lbs 4-wheel model at Harbor Freight is selling for $39 this month...

I went in to get another stand at my local HF store and thought I was going to pay the $59 on the tag....then it rang up for $39! I have the identical stand which I have been using for a couple of years. It's held up to several rebuilds including a couple of very heavy Turbo engines

Souk, do you use the official adapter ring for your stand or did you fabricate your own? Thanks!

Brian, while not ideal due to lack of clutch removal access, here is one I quickly fabbed up out of scrap angle iron, 1/2" bar stock and a few pcs of steel tube. It worked great for all but clutch removal and the price was right . Once the engine was substantially stripped down, I simply temporarily slid it onto my work bench to remove the clutch.

Geez Tim...I don't think that thing will hold up a fully assembled engine Nice fab work. That last picture looks like it was taking during one of my rebuilds. I have a table that I line with plastic for parts and I even have a tray that I clamp to the base of my engine stand. Great minds think alike

Brian, I have both. I've use the stand with a yoke and the ring.

Tim, excellent work and a great low-cost solution. Thanks for the pics. I'm filing this thread for future reference.

I actually cut a 4x4 to wedge between the engine and the stand for later as the engine got heavier. I trust MY welds, but I just could not bring myself to trust the HF egine stands welds even though the thing is rated for probably double what a fully assembled 911 engine weighs.

Someone gave us a roll of the fabric reinforced plastic/vinyl, I think it is some kind of cheap wall covering. Anyhow it works great as table liner for oily repairs or for when we have a fly-in party and need to turn the work benches into food tables

The problem with selling something like this, is that it would not be very profitable to build in relatively small quantities.

I also have that HF engine stand. It currently has an 83 turbo engine (fully dressed) on it using the Porsche adapter ring which slides right into the engine stand.

It doesn't seem like the sturdiest setup but I don't see it going over.
