The Jerks!

I have a 1977 911s 915 tranny. I have read for years about all the fixes for a jerky 1st gear rattle when taking off. And I have taken actions on most of them. Readjusted throttle cable, checked trans mounts, etc. My clutch and plate have 3000 miles on it. It seems that the jerking would also happen in 2nd gear. But it does not. Takes off smooth as silk.

So, why is my car a jerk in first gear but not in second?

When you replaced the clutch and pressure plate, did you have the flywheel re-ground? Not "turned", re-ground? My '76 had a new clutch pack and with the flywheel done it takes off smooth as silk.

Transmission bellhousing to engine bolts still tight?

Engine seal leaking onto clutch?

You said you checked the engine/trans mounts - have you replaced them?

I have not checked the the bellhousing bolts but will try that. No leaks and I did change all four mounts to the sport mounts the same time I rebuilt my motor.

It still seems weird to me that it shutters in first and not at all from a standing start in 2nd.

Scott,

Sounds like the transmission and engine mounts to me ... too soft mounts, or old/cracked mounts cause too much freedom of travel, and often result in a judder. That may be the motion you are describing as jerking.

Are we sure the jerking is from the tranny clutch?

I also have a 1977 911S 2.7l.

I've been messing with the timing and fuel air mixture, will be verifying CIS pressure and fuel pressure and the all time favorite WUR................all of which if not in sync with each other can cause baulking/jerking when cold.

Just throwing it out there as a wild idea to see if it sticks.
