Removing Fuel Odor
I've just discovered about 1 litre of fuel splashing around in the cabin!!! i know how it got there & it wasn't my fault!!!
But how do I quickly get rid of the overpowering smell - ideally without removing every single bit of carpet? Michael

Michael,
I don't think you really have much of a chioice than to remove the affected carpet. The question is, can it be salvaged. I would start by getting as much fuel up as I could with some rags which you intend to dispose. Then laundering the carpet by hand with a scrub brush and some dish soap. You will probably have to wash it many times before the smell will come out. I would plan on doing the same to the floor boards although those should clean up much easier. Leave the windows open as long as you reasonably can to get rid of the residual smell. Fuel vapors have probably already traveled to other parts of the car. Airing it out will help. Sorry I can't offer a more convienient solution for you. Good luck. Matt

Water doesn't do much for getting rid of gas smell (they don't mix). Get the carpet out, soak up the liquid, put something on there to dry it out and then shampoo the drying agent out. In the meantime, air out the car and keep away from open flames.

Proceed with caution gasoline vapors are so easy to ignite!

I don't know if this would help, but possibly a large container of Baking soda to help absorb the odor. It may take some time though.
