A/C Trouble
A/C has worked fine, though not ice cold, on my '79SC. Yesterday, I went to run it just to circulate the coolant/lubricant. Nothing. No fan, no compressor. Fuses OK. I was thinking of starting with the relay, but I wasn't sure if both circuits (fan and compressor) depend on the relay to work. Thoughts? I don't use the A/C much, but I want to keep the car original, and I hate when stuff doesn't work.

My guess is a low pressure switch, you've lost enough freon that it won't turn on. Can't hlep with where, but on many cars its on the receiver/drier in the front left wheel welll. You can use a jumper to bypass and test.

My '79 stock AC does not have a pressure switch. Newer cars have them but '79's do not. You might want to check your fuse block as my AC quit once and it ended up being a bad contact at the fuse and the fuse block terminal area where the fuse block recieved it's power.

Check the relay in the box where the evaporator is. Sometimes it can stick.

no fan blower? even with the a/c off?

Start with this rather simple schematic for the AC at this link:

Had exactly the same problem, mechanic added some freon located the leak, fixed and recharged it and viola COLD air now...

Bigchillcar - No. that's why I'm wondering about the relay. With no freon and no lo-press switch, the fan should still come on. Fuses check out, but I'll look again.

Look at the schematic mentioned before, locate the relay,
get your check light or VOM and follow the procedure. |
agreed..that fan should work even if you've removed the compressor completely from the car. can't recall if there's a blower relay, but there must be..like kuehl says, locate it. might check pelican's parts section under a/c components and see if a fan relay is listed..

Check the relay in the smuggler box. You can buy a similar automotive at Rat Shack or pay big buck for a genuine PORSCHE box relay that is now made in CHINA.

were'nt they always made in China?
