Concial Air Filter Installation
I've newly registered, though I've been reading these discussions on this forum since I purchased my 911 last June. So far I've made some minor repairs; replaced the fog lamps (and bulbs), a few fuses and relays, fixed the central locking system (a major pain, but it let me see how "half-asked" a previous owner/mechanic was about using original hardware or the lack there of in both door panels/mechanisms) and some routine stuff.
Now I'm looking to install this conical air filter kit that I purchased last week. I've included a picture of the kit's contents and a separate picture of the problem I see with the kit. The intake pipe is 3 inches in diameter, as is the inlet for the manifold bracket they supplied, but the hose that should mate between them is 3 inches on one end and then reduces to 2.5 inches on the other. I'm totally baffled by this. The kit's contents seem to be of high quality. The best part is that the kit didn't include directions. So I went back to the site I purchased it from and in the "small print" it stated that instructions are not included in the kit and it was recommended to be installed by a professional. Well that was nice to read, though this kind of installation shouldn't be rocket science. My questions are should I "make" the connection hose work, am I wrong to think that it should be 3 inch in diameter on each end (so it would fit nicely to each metal connection, or should I purchase a new 3 inch hose? One a side note, the kit also came with three other brackets (in the picture of the kit); one is belt at a 90 degree angle and the other two are flat. I was thinking that they should be used to secure the K&N filter in place so it doesn't move around inside the engine compartment. Any ideas? Thank you all in advance for any help or advice. I've also attached a picture of my car, since I couldn't figure out how to post it to the gallery (said I didn't have access). Thank you, Matt ![]() ![]() ![]()

Sorry to hear that. Quite an annoyance. A local hose/tubing shop will carry 3" hose. Or, if you want silicon in a fancy color, there are lots of places online where you can order a short piece.
Try www.silhoses.com or www.hosetechniques.com or just google silicon hose to find several others. BTW, nice looking car!

Thanks Im4Duke.
I appreciate the advice. That was what I thought I was going to have to do. Though I was wondering if anyone had a similiar kit that came with instructions. Does anyone know where the 3 brackets would mount to in the engine compartment? Thanks, Matt

Wil,
Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, I was hoping that the kit would have a connection in the metal "elbow" for the breather hose to hook on to, but of course it doesn't. I had the same problem when I modified my '96 Jeep XJ. I'm going to purchase a small (I think the hose is 1/4", but I'll have to check it) hose filter cap, and connect that to a catch can. I will have to find a good place to mount the can to. I have some spare room, thanks to a previous owner removing the A/C. Any ideas about the brackets that came with the kit?

I've decided on the advice and a gut check to get a 3 inch hose to make my connections.
I'm also considering a way to modify the elbow tubing so that I can install a inlet tube for the breather line. In the end I think that will be easier than installing a filter in the line and attaching it to a can that I'll have to take apart and empty every so often. I'm sure there's a good reason for the breather line to feed into the intake, so I'm going to try to keep with that design. When I get the mod done I'll take pictures and post them. Does anyone have any ideas for the three brackets that came with the kit?
